A Call for Urgent Action

Australia’s mining states’ Chamber of Minerals and Energy along with its entrepreneurs have been calling on the government to undertake urgent steps to address these skills shortages. They even warned that unless urgent steps are taken to address the ongoing skills crunch, the nation will miss out on the full benefit of the resources boom.

Now, the Australian Federal government has undertaken necessary actions to address these labor problems. Just recently, guidelines were announced for the Enterprise Migration Agreements which will enable companies with resources projects valued at over $2 billion, and with more than 1500 staff, to source foreign temporary workers more easily.

Moreover, the Australian government has also done re-classifications of certain territories and regions to be included as a regional employment hardship area under its Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS). This is done in an attempt to offset the acute skills shortage triggered by Western Australia’s burgeoning mining boom.

The RSMS will provide Australian employers with another easier avenue to recruit the skilled workers they need from overseas as they will be given a chance to compete for some of the 16,000 skilled working visa for Australia offered each year under the scheme. It will also give skilled temporary work visa to Australia holders a more streamlined pathway to permanent migration.

Currently, the Australian government is making the needed reforms and upgrades on its Australian visa requirements for workers as well as on its Australia migration visa policies and processing. This is done to better address the current labor problem the nation is facing.

Callaloo (spinach) Soup

Pepperpot Stew

A type of meat stew usually made with beef, pork, chicken, lamb or goat, pepperpot originated in neighbouring Guyana, but has become a part of the diverse Saint Lucian cuisine. Authentic pepperpot is prepared with casareep – an old Amer-Indian flavouring derived from cassava. The meat is browned, and cooked in a Dutch type oven with its broth, green beans, celery, sliced carrots, diced potatoes, onions, pepper and other spices. This flavourful stew will add a delightful, savoury twist.

While in Saint Lucia, be sure to try their wide variety of tropical fruits which include coconuts, guavas, mangoes, passion fruit and pineapples. Beetles in Mexico

No, this is not a article about bugs. This is an article about one of the best selling cars of all time, The Volkswagen Beetle. With sales in the staggering 25 million range, this truly is a world car, so it should come as no surprise that Volkswagen decided to manufacture them in one of the most populous countries in the Americas.

Production of the Beetle began in Mexico in 1955, and it is interesting to note that Volkswagen was not the first car company to set up manufacturing facilities in Mexico. By the time Volkswagen arrived there, both Chrysler and Studebaker-Packard Company were already well established. Initially the cars were made to be assembled elsewhere, but by 1964, completed vehicles were being rolled off the assembly line.

Although the Mexican made Beetles look the same as their European counterparts, they had some slight stylistic differences. The earlier Mexican models had a larger windshield, rear window, door and glass quarter. After 1972, the models produced in Mexico, essentially became identical to those made in Germany. The only major changes to this incredibly simple vehicle was the introduction of electronic ignition in 1998, an anti-theft system in 1990 and a legally required catalytic converter in 1991. Fuel injectors, hydraulic valve lifters and spin on oil filters were introduced in 1993. The final mechanical enhancement came in 1995, with the addition of front disc brakes.

Changes in taste and politics in Mexico ended the Beetle’s production run there. Mexico City, being so populated, required very strict emission laws for all new vehicles. Unfortunately the Beetle could not meet these new requirements and production ceased. Due to high crime, two door vehicles were no longer allowed to be used as taxi cabs, so all existing Beetle cabs were banned. From that point on, only four door vehicles could be used as taxi’s. One can assume this would allow a separation between the driver and passengers (to protect both), or to make it difficult for someone to hide in the back seat and mug the passenger in the front seat.

Even though the classic styling was recently brought back in a retro version of the Beetle, tastes had changed in Mexico and people moved on to models with newer styles. Sadly, production of the Beetle never returned to Mexico. Still though, there is nothing like staying in the Grand Sirenis resort and renting a convertible Beetle to drive though the streets of Cancun to explore the Yucatan peninsula in. Top down, sun shining and a cool breeze wafting over the open car. What could be better?
